Last summer, 8-year-old Mateo stood nervously at the edge of the pool. It was his first time at YMCA camp—and his first time near water. His mom, a single parent working two jobs, had never been able to afford swimming lessons. But thanks to a donor-funded camp scholarship, Mateo was here. On the third day, surrounded by new friends and a cheering lifeguard, Mateo took a deep breath and jumped in. That splash wasn’t just about learning to swim—it was about conquering fear, gaining confidence, and discovering a world of possibility. Each summer, stories like this unfold at YMCA of Silicon Valley camps, swimming lessons, and safety around water classes.
